Geographically localised at the
center of Portugal,
Ortiga is a little village of the municipality of Macao, district of Santarem. Using
the old division in provinces, Ortiga is localised in the Beira Baixa; but it
is important to mention that only the Tejo river-bend separates it from the
Alto Alentejo and that its geographic position confuses it with the Ribatejo |
Ortiga is, in this context, at the confluence of three provinces and it is fair to consider it as an ethno-cultural symbiosis of Ribatejo, Beira Baixa and Alto Alentejo. But this fact doesnt take away the character of its culture because, unquestionably, Ortiga managed to melt the three cultures and to shape them with very proper usages, determined above all by the omnipresence of the River Tejo. |
